Ihuatzio, Michoacan

This lamp was made by the artisan group Tejedores de Chuspata, in Ihuatzio, Michoacán. It is made with natural fiber chuspata, also known as tule, an aquatic reed that grows around lakes in the state of Michoacán. Its simple design consists of two cylinders intertwined with natural fiber, creating a play of lights and shadows when turned on.

The chuspata weaving technique is one of the oldest worked in the communities surrounding Lake Pátzcuaro, as it dates back to pre-Hispanic times and its perfection is due to Vasco de Quiroga. Chuspata fiber can only be collected once a year, and is a job traditionally carried out by older adults, and represents a cultural heritage that has been transmitted for generations and that exalts the artisans of the communities in Michoacán.

The hanging version conveys warmth in home and office interiors.
