The Paula Dress is inspired by a handmade skirt design called Sipúcha, commonly worn by Rarámuri women. Each skirt can use around 6 to 15 meters of fabric and can have two or three ruffles at the bottom. They are designed according to the tastes of the person who will wear it, adding more volume, fabric and complexity to the design. Made from a single piece of fabric, the skirt is held in place and fastened with a belt called a Faja. We worked on these designs with Paula, a Rarámuri artisan in the sewing workshop, and with some design modifications such as minimizing the amount of fabric used, adding straps to the upper part of the skirt to turn it into a dress, and adding the common spike embroidery. worn by the Rarámuri, representing the mountains of the Sierra Tarahumara, thus the Paula Dress was born.
