Yellow Oak, Verazcruz

This basket was made by the Bugambilias group in the Nahua community of Encino Amarillo in the state of Veracruz. It is a tribute to the volcano of the same name, located in the south of Veracruz, and brings together traditional "junco" basket weaving techniques with materials from the regional jungles and used by the residents of this area for their hardness and resistance to humidity. These materials have great utilitarian meaning because for generations they have been used to create baskets for collecting and storing seeds.

The artisans who are part of the same family and originate from the Encino community: Fortuna and Pablo, together with their daughters María and Gabriela, walk kilometers to gather, cut and clean the fibers that will be used for the weaving, in addition, they collaborate with the expert group in wood carving known as Agua y Monte, originally from the municipality of Pajapan, Veracruz, for the production of the basket handles.
