Weto Cajete
San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
Weto decorative cajetes honor the tradition of clay molcajetes. Its rough interior finish helped the grinding of different ingredients in food preparation. The Zapotec word Weto means to grind. The color of black clay is due to the specific properties of the clay of this region and the firing process. Clay is extracted from the surrounding hills and soaked in water to remove impurities, a process that can take up to a month. The clay is molded by hand, on flat surfaces near the ground and once the pieces have been modeled, they are left to dry for approximately 3 weeks. Its burning or cooking, together with the reduction of oxygen, give the piece that color. The bowl can be used as decoration or to contain dry objects.
